Daily Words; Deep Impact
Why affirmations belong in your routine.
Affirmations have played a huge role in my life for the past few years and they have made the greatest impact on my view of myself. It is too easy to see the negative in yourself, whether it is your appearance, or feeling disappointed in how you responded to a certain situation, or feeling like you’re not a good enough friend, wife, or mom. But, the negative beliefs that we inherently adopt about ourselves are a lie (Unless you’re a psychopath, that is a different conversation). We might hear a comment that we translate to mean something it wasn’t intended to mean. You might have been told you weren’t good enough at some point in your life. First, don’t let other humans dictate who you are. Second, hurt people, hurt people. I could go on a whole tangent about that aspect of this, but today we are here to discuss affirmations!
Affirmations have been studied by psychologists, and there is evidence to show the positive effects of them. Studies show that affirmations can help reduce stress, improve openness to advice, and sometimes improve behavior. The thing that I believe is harder to measure with research, would be how affirmations impact self-worth and self-esteem. These are the areas in my life where I have seen the most positive effect from affirmations. My mental health and view of myself completely transformed after a few months of saying affirmations in the mirror every morning. I also look at this from a biblical perspective. Who God says we are and how that plays a role in the affirmations I choose to focus on. The Bible talks about the power of our words in Proverbs 18:21. It says that the tongue has the power of life and death. I take this verse very seriously and have seen the impact of speaking life over myself and my life.
Where to start…
If this idea is new to you, or you have no idea what types of affirmations make sense for you, I have made a list of ones that you can’t go wrong with. You can add to it, or choose a few that resonate the most with you. Commit to 5 affirmations that you say in the mirror every morning for 60 days (I keep my list with my toothbrush, so I for sure see it); watch your mind and sense of self transform!
