Beginner’s Guide to Game Day Hosting

I did not grow up watching football, unless you count the occasional high school football game I attended in my youth. However, when my husband and I started dating it became very clear very quickly that the Sundays of my future were going to be football filled from September to February. And that has remained the truth. That being said, I have learned something very important; I love football. Who knew! I genuinely appreciate the strategy and technique of the sport. I love the comradely and playful banter of it all and, like many others, I love the food.

With football season officially in full swing, I spent last weekend preparing for our family’s fantasy football draft party. I thought I would give a guide to hosting a football party with a list of menu items that will please anyone and everyone.

Main Course:

  • Burgers and Hot Dogs - A classic and a crowd pleaser

  • Roasted or Smoked Chicken - This is a favorite in our family. We also provide rolls to give the option for chicken sandwiches/sliders.

  • Ribs - Messy, but delicious

  • Sliders - easy, offer versatility, and very kid friendly

  • Pizza

  • Sloppy Joes

  • Casserole

Sides:

  • Macaroni Salad

  • Potato Salad

  • Fruit Salad or Assorted chopped fruit/berries

  • Cucumber Salad

  • Deviled Eggs

  • Potato Gratin

  • Mac & Cheese

  • Chips & Dip

  • Veggies & Ranch or Hummus

  • Soft Pretzel Bites w/ cheese sauce

  • Rolls w/ Garlic Butter & Honey Butter

Sweets:

  • Brownies

  • Cookies

  • Mini Cupcakes

  • Dessert Bars (Pinterest has great options)

  • Ice Cream Sundae Bar, if you want to go all out

  • Assortment of candies

  • Cheesecake Bites

  • Fruit Crumble (Apple, Blueberry, Cherry)

Drinks:

  • Assorted Sodas

  • Sparkling Water

  • Lemonade

  • Iced Tea

  • Beer and Hard Seltzer

  • Hot Chocolate Bar

When preparing to host a game day party, I recommend a main dish, 2-4 sides (depending on how many guests you are expecting), and 2-3 dessert options! When it comes to the sides, be sure to hit as much of the food pyramid as possible. In other words, don’t have all carbs, but include a veggie or fruit option as well. This list is just a baseline, feel free to get creative! This list gives options that are little to max effort - do what makes sense for you as a host! I realized when I hosted my first football event that a guide would’ve been nice; I had no idea where to start. I hope this helps you to host some spectacular and memorable game day parties in your future!
